Welcome to our summer series: The Buzz on the Beach. Click here if this is your first time here. This week’s question comes from, well, me. Melissa. I love taking my boys to the beach. But I hate the tons of sand we come home with. Erin’s powder trick has helped a lot but I still don’t know how to get sand out of my boys’ rash guards. It seems to be embedded in there and makes them look dirtier than they are. I know all that sand is not good for the washing machine or sink drains. Help! So, how do YOU get sand out of your bathing suits and rash guards? Leave us a comment and let us know. And if you have a question for The Buzz on the Beach, you can send an email to Melissa@capemaymoms.com

I’m Just Not A Beach Bunny. It’s true, I feel like a traitor to my fellow Cape May residents. I don’t enjoy the beach as much as I should. Lets face it, squeezing myself into a bathing suit then having to deal with the salt, bugs and sand just isn’t a day at the beach for me. Toss in some Jelly Fish, seagulls and tourists and I am down right there painted green and funny deemed the beach Grinch of summer. I tried to be a good Mom, and give my kids the summer experience. I decided to take my kids with some friends of ours to the Community Pool in N. Cape May. Close to our house, no traffic, no salt, no sand… seemed like a worthy option. Brought in our lunch, sat down and began to chat and everyone was having a great time. They even allowed floaties in the pool, it seemed like a great option as we all discussed getting a season pass. Lower Cape May Swimming Pool. $2 per kid, $3 per adult. $80 season pass for a family of four. 609) 886-7464 706 Winslow Ave North Cape May, NJ 08204 Then the thunder rolled. [...]

From time to time, we all wish we could get away just for a little while. Go somewhere by ourselves with no kids, no hubby and just have a moment of our own time to find ourselves again. This week, I indeed get that opportunity thrust upon me, as I travel to Arizona for school. True, it’s not really a vacation, as I will be crammed in conference room for one week breathing manufactured air and going over counseling theory until my brain pops. Maybe that’s why this trip is weighing so heavy on me as I pack up to go. That and my six year old has really learned the art of a good guilt trip. That’s why I have decided to list some helpful tips for when you have to leave your kids for a few days. 1. If your husband is like mine, the kids won’t get fed anything but fast food and delivery if we don’t plan ahead. Make a list of meal options, and stock the house with fresh fruit, frozen heat and serve dinner and new milk. 2. Make a scavenger hunt for the kids. Each morning my kids will pull a clue out [...]

Our first question is from Karen in Northfield: What’s the best way to enjoy lunch at the beach? With all the spills and messes that go with little kids, we always seem to be under seagull attack and I’m sure it annoys our surrounding beach goers! Leave a reply with your advice for Karen below. And don’t forget to submit your own question to Melissa@capemaymoms.com Can’t wait to hear from you!!!!!

Saturday was the years popular West Cape May Strawberry Festival in Wilbraham Park. The sweet draw of Strawberries mixed with the usual Cape May street fair charm was in full bloom and ripe for the picking. Best way to enjoy this fair is with a big appetite for sweet treats and ready for a leisurely stroll though Strawberry themed venues of jewelry, clothing, glassware and other jewels of artistry. The weather was perfect and this strawberry seeker and her family felt incredibly lucky with the parking, happy we made the early morning efforts to arrive around 10am. While the fare at the Strawberry Festival wasn’t surprising, what was there was done well, with a few well placed surprises to be enjoyed in the tasty treats department. The most original delicacy was a strawberry taco, tortilla with strawberries and chocolate sauce topped with whipped cream in small servings for $7 an experiment. Surprisingly delicious but barely enough to share, but was about the only original sampling the fair had to offer. Chocolate dipped strawberries had a deal of six for $5 in a basket which were standard but a huge hit with our family. Strawberry shortcake was nothing special but was [...]

Memorial Day has come and gone, it’s officially summer at the shore! If you’re like most Cape May County Moms, you’ll be spending a lot of time on the beach this summer. A trip to the beach is not exactly a walk in the park when you’ve got little people in tow. When you’re there, you want to make sure you have everything you’re going to need. Here’s a list of Mom’s Beach Bag Essentials: Let’s start with your beach bag itself. You want a large sturdy bag. One that can fit absolutely everything you need and then some and one that can withstand the wear and tear of being at the beach. A large mesh bag with handles is ideal. I love the Sand-Away Beach Bag ($14.95) from One Step Ahead. It has nice long handles so you can wear in over your shoulder or across your body. It also has hook and loop closures across the opening, so the contents won’t fall out while you’re chasing your toddler down the beach. You can simply shake the sand off at the end of the day and then fold it up into it’s pocket-sized pouch. You’ll also want a blanket, [...]

Everyone has got one. You know what I am talking about…and opinions. Sometimes the most interesting opinions are on the subjects that cut closest to the heart, and incite riot like emotions. I say this now to set up the expectation, that when you read this people might have a strong reaction. My intention is to prepare us for next year in raising our awareness, over our blood pressure. I have had an opportunity to be involved in my kids School District now in different aspects for the last two years. While the district has some great teachers and resources, some of the attitudes and policies tend to strike me as parent unfriendly. While this might hit me as cold, it’s not entirely the school’s fault. They have follow policy to keep our kids safe. However, it’s at the expense of keeping parents out of the classroom, then turning around and blaming them for their children’s under achievements. The policies are very stay away, come back, go away, give us money, don’t call us we’ll call you… by the way don’t forget to vote for our money, and yes we are taking away all after school programs, even those people [...]

It’s June and the summer season has officially arrived in Cape May County! Here at Cape May Moms, we’re excited to introduce a new interactive series: The Buzz on the Beach. And the best part is that it features YOU. The Moms! Not only will you be the ones to ask the questions, but you will also be our panel of experts. Pretty cool, huh? Each week during the summer we will be featuring questions from fellow moms about anything from “Where are the best beaches for potty training kids” to “What are your favorite rainy day activities in Cape May County” or even “How do you handle that kid at the beach who keeps throwing sand”. Like your 7th grade teacher always said, No question is too silly! So you can email your questions to Melissa@capemaymoms.com and then check in every Wednesday during the summer to weigh in on that week’s Buzz from the Beach!

“Don’t be a rat. Don’t nobody like a rat.” – Frank McFeeters That’s what I got from my Dad as a kid. And really? It’s true and it’s an important life lesson. No one does like a rat. Not in the kid world and not in the adult word either. It’s something I want to instill in my kids, but at the preschool age it can be walking a fine line. I want to discourage my kids from being tattle-tales, but I want to encourage them to come to me if there’s something going on that I really do need to know about. At 4, it can be difficult to see the distinction. I’d be willing to bet that Adam and Eve told Cain and Abel, “I don’t want to know about it unless someone’s bleeding.” That classic parenting line might seem harsh, but the underlying message is to try and work it out on your own first before enlisting the aide of the grown-ups. It’s just the right approach for preschool age kids, but it’s been my experience that preschoolers aren’t always that great at picking up on underlying messages. My 4 year old has a strong sense of [...]

Home Made will be holding a clay bowl making workshop with the ladies from The Madd Potter’s Studio on Friday, June 17th from 6 -8 PM. Grab your girls and come out for a unique night out! We’ll be playing with clay and making simple clay slab bowls. The bowls we make will be used in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser that will take place at Woodland Village in the Fall. Empty Bowls is an international effort to combat hunger by involving people to make and donate bowls which are then used at the Empty Bowls Event to serve a simple meal to the community. 100% of the proceeds from each meal goes to the Community Food Bank of South Jersey and Imagine Render (the organizers of the Empty Bowls Campaign world wide). In 2010 The Madd Potter’s Studio was able tonearly $5,000 at their Empty Bowl Soup Tasting Event that included soups from some of Cape May County’s finest restaurants. This year they have an even larger goal to meet. Come out to Home Made on June 17th and be part of this amazing effort! The cost to attend is $15.00. You’ll have the opportunity to meet some new people, [...]
